Participant Reflections
In Their Own Words

The Foundations programme was slower than I expected, but that turned out to be exactly what I needed. I had heard most of the vocabulary before, but I had never really understood what it meant. By the third session, I was asking questions I would not have known to ask at the start.

We attended the financial mapping weekend together. The template was more thorough than I thought it would be — getting to the liabilities section took longer than expected because we had to look some things up that we did not have at hand. But by Sunday afternoon we had something we could actually refer to. We had not had that before.

The insurance workshop was the most practically useful day I have spent in a long time. I had three policies I had never properly read. I worked through all three that day with the checklist. Found two things in one of them that I will need to take up with the agent. The facilitator was very clear that recommending anything was not her role, which I appreciated.

I attended the Foundations programme after living here for six years without really understanding how my Thai savings accounts and the few fund holdings I had actually worked. The facilitator was patient with questions from someone whose context was slightly different from most of the group. Good material, good pace, and no attempt to sell me anything at any point.

I had done the financial map weekend the year before, so I came to the insurance workshop with that as context. It helped to already have my liabilities and obligations mapped — the insurance sections of the planning template made more sense once I understood what exclusions I was carrying. I think ideally you do both, but either one on its own is worthwhile.

Travelled from Chiang Rai for the mapping weekend. Worth it. The template is genuinely useful — it is structured around how Thai households actually hold things, not a Western model with Thai names attached. The facilitator's individual attention during the sessions was the main thing that made it work. Three hours in, I had questions I had not anticipated having.

Case Studies
How Participants Applied What They Learned
Case Study — Foundations Programme
A household that had been holding cash and wanted to understand the alternatives
The Situation
A couple in their early fifties had accumulated savings held almost entirely in fixed deposits. They had heard about mutual funds from family members but did not understand the difference between fund types, what the costs meant, or how to assess the risk involved.
What the Programme Addressed
Through the four Foundations sessions, they worked through Thai fund categories, understood expense ratios, and developed a way of thinking about time horizon relative to their specific situation — two children in secondary school, a property, and ten to fifteen working years remaining.
Where They Were Afterwards
They left with a clearer vocabulary for discussing options with their bank and a set of questions for any fund before considering it. They mentioned in a follow-up message two months later that they had had a substantively different conversation with their bank as a result.
Case Study — Insurance Workshop
A participant who discovered a policy condition she had not known about
The Situation
A woman in her late forties had two health policies — one from her employer and one she had taken out privately eight years earlier. She had never closely read either. She attended the workshop primarily because a friend had recommended it.
What the Workshop Covered
Working through the checklist with the facilitator, she identified a pre-existing condition clause in her private policy that she had not known was there. The facilitator explained what the clause meant, without advising what to do about it — only ensuring she understood the wording clearly.
Next Steps Taken
She subsequently met with the broker who had sold her the policy, armed with the checklist and the specific clause. She described the meeting as one where she felt, for the first time, that she understood what was being discussed. The outcome of that conversation was hers to determine.
